📅 11th December 2025 - Aid, trade and geopolitics - the new world disorder with Peter Frankopan
The old global system, for all its faults, was based on rules-based trade and predictable North-South aid flows. Not any more. Rich countries, notably the US and UK, are slashing their aid budgets, while Donald Trump’s weaponisation of tariffs heralds a new world of protectionist power politics. Are we now facing an era in which the big countries do the deals that they can, while the poorer and smaller states accept the fate that they must? The answer will shape our world for a generation.
To discuss these pressing issues, we were delighted to host the award-winning and best-selling author Peter Frankopan. Professor of global history at Worcester College, Oxford, and author of the 2015 blockbuster The Silk Roads. Charlie has been fighting back: partnering with WASP (Windrush Against Sewage Pollution), raising the alarm in Parliament, and challenging Thames Water’s latest £3 billion debt scheme in the High Court.
